Biography:

Dr. Gurfein is the Chief Scientific Officer at Tivic Health Systems, a San Francisco Bay Area company that develops non-drug, bioelectronic devices focused on treating chronic medical conditions. He is also a faculty member in the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of California San Francisco. Dr. Gurfein received a Sc.B. in Neuroscience from Brown University, a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and completed immunology postdoctoral work at the University of California San Francisco, where he subsequently joined the research faculty.

Dr. Gurfein has a strong background in consumer and medical device development and expertise in basic science, clinical trial design and execution, FDA strategy, intellectual property development, and startup finance. He is a founder and has worked with several early stage companies both as a management team member and advisor. Silicon Valley Business Journal named him one of the 40 best and brightest under the age of 40 in 2019.

Committed to being of service, Dr. Gurfein frequently mentors scientists and entrepreneurs and serves on the Advisory Council for Community Housing Partnership, a San Francisco non-profit that is focused on transitioning homeless individuals into housing and self-sufficiency.
