In the wake of devastating wildfires that swept through Los Angeles, YPO Los Angeles hosted a pivotal panel discussion, “Rise & Rebuild.” Spearheaded by Brad Scott and Corrie, who meticulously planned the event alongside Ron Miller and Risa, the focus was on community service and supporting small businesses affected by the fires, like Be Rosy and Paliskates. These efforts reflect the YPO model—a framework that can be adopted worldwide to assist communities affected by tragedies.
Among the attendees were couples who shared their heartfelt experiences; one couple spoke of narrowly escaping their home as flames engulfed their neighborhood, while another recounted the struggle to keep their small business going in the aftermath. These poignant stories set the tone for the event, underscoring the urgent need for community recovery and resilience as a collective priority.
The panel featured a distinguished lineup of industry leaders who shared insights and strategies aimed at recovering from the crisis while empowering the affected communities.
Lew Horne, president of Advisory Services for the Pacific Southwest at CBRE, has been instrumental in shaping recovery efforts. Reflecting on the impact of the fires, he recognized the urgency of a structured response. “The devastating fires have affected tens of thousands of lives in our community,” Horne said, emphasizing the collaborative effort needed moving forward. “We aim to create a road map that addresses immediate needs while building long-term resilience. It will take a united approach to rebuild our neighborhoods effectively.”
Greg Econn, president and managing director of Venbrook and a key figure in the launch of Steadfast LA, contributed an innovative perspective, particularly in discussions around insurance solutions for those impacted by the fires. “Our commitment to raise $1 billion in coverage across three burn areas is a testament to our dedication to support homeowners on their rebuilding journeys,” he said Econn elaborated on the importance of preventive measures, emphasizing the need to rethink fire safety with fire-resistant materials and established protocols to protect lives and properties in the future.
Raul Anaya, president and co-head of Business Banking at Bank of America, who is leading the bank’s fire relief initiatives, tackled the critical issue of underinsurance—a significant barrier to recovery. “We’re looking at a financial gap that could total up to $5 billion,” he said. “It’s essential that we tap into creative government funding solutions to support those affected.” He also underscored the importance of community recovery. “Our mission is to ensure that every family affected can rebuild—not just structurally, but emotionally as well.”
Jake Levine, senior director of climate and energy in the Biden Administration, and now an advisor to the Department of Angels—established to help recovery efforts—stressed the importance of empowering survivors to take charge of their recovery. “We need to provide tools for the community,” he said, emphasizing the necessity for public-private partnerships. “When communities come together, we can effect real change. A collective voice is vital as we navigate policy-making and funding avenues that can heal our neighborhoods.”
Maryam Zar, founder of Womenfound and a commissioner on the Los Angeles Commission on the Status of Women, spoke about the importance of community involvement in the rebuilding process. “We are the community, and we must work in tandem with each other to rebuild,” Zar said. She also highlighted environmental concerns. “It’s crucial that we not only rebuild but also ensure that we are creating safe, healthy spaces for our families. Community input is essential in shaping those plans.”
