Following the inspiration of Laird Hamilton, big-wave surfing has emerged as a globetrotting thrill sport, where the intense rushes of adrenaline and endorphins outweigh the risk of serious injury and even death. Carlos Burle, a professional surfer and extreme waterman, is a world-class wave chaser – making a living of riding the tides. His most recent endeavor brought him to Nazaré, Portugal, where one of the biggest swells of the century sent waves of over 100 feet toward shore. Over a shallow reef bed at a historic coastal peak, Praia do Norte, Carlos Burle braved the water and set the world record for largest wave ever surfed in January 2013.
