From the moment I land in the city, the buzzing energy in New York is contagious. There is something about being surrounded by the towering skyscrapers that always makes me feel inspired. I’m certainly not the only one who feels it. Among crowded sidewalks, it seems that everyone has somewhere to be and is in a hurry to get there. Manhattan looked much different the last time I visited, in August 2020 during the midst of the pandemic. It was refreshing to see New York alive again with the same resilience I’d remembered.
Pendry Manhattan West
Even in a city that never sleeps, I’ve found that being able to revitalize at the end of each day absolutely makes all the difference in seizing the next. This is where Pendry Manhattan West totally nails it. The latest Pendry Hotels & Resorts location, and fifth in the U.S., brings an essence of its laid-back West Coast influence to its highly anticipated New York debut. The contemporary curved design by acclaimed architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill is art in and of itself, featuring 164 luxury guest rooms, including 30 suites. Stepping through the front door is like a complete transformation into a retreat where elegant style meets polished comfort—juxtaposition from the whirlwind of chaotic sounds and smells right outside. The warmth and generosity immediately received from the staff at the door offers a sense of familiarity.
For unparalleled dining, wellness, and lifestyle experiences there is no need to venture far. Inside boasts a sanctuary of chic ambiance in a spacious and collaborative space. The lobby lounge, Bar Pendry, is an intimate spot with carefully crafted cocktails and bites. Sipping dirty martinis in the bronze lighting feels almost like being transported to a Prohibition-era dive with a sophisticated twist. Also located within the lobby is the airy Garden Room, an oasis of lush, green foliage that offers an all-day coffee menu. My favorite part about both spaces is how stately artwork is uniquely incorporated throughout. For breakfast with a view that can’t be missed, be sure to try the Vista Lounge, located on the fourth floor.
The state-of-the-art exercise facility at Pendry Manhattan West features a 24-hour, 1,700-square-foot Fitness Center and Movement Studio stocked with all-new Technogym equipment and Peloton bikes, plus class access. This facility is more than enough to provide an enriching workout for the avid gym-goer, as well as motivate even the least disciplined.
Rooms
Floor-to-ceiling windows offer dreamy panoramic views of the iconic skyline. The room’s cozy, modern interior is curated by local Gachot Studios. Everything about it emanates luxury, from the fine linens and plush duvet to the marble bathroom with walk-in shower and clawfoot tub. In-room technology adds convenience at your fingertips, quite literally, with a control center for lights and audio and a smart TV.
Location
Just steps away from Hudson Yards, Penn Station, and The Highline, the Pendry is situated among a hub of activities, including shopping, diverse dining options, cultural sights, and entertainment. Easy access to the Upper West Side, Financial District, and Chelsea is prime for those visiting for either business or leisure. For added convenience, the hotel provides an Escalade SUV for complimentary transportation to local destinations as part of a recent partnership with Cadillac.
What makes this property even more exciting is how it is an essential piece in the heart of Manhattan West, one of Brookfield Properties’ most ambitious large-scale development projects to date. Positioned between 31st to 33rd Streets and 9th to 10th Avenues, the eight-acre, six-building, mixed-use complex set to be completed in 2023 is already gaining recognition as a trendy new hot spot.
After an impeccable stay, I’m still particularly impressed by how quickly hotel management was able to master first-rate hospitality in the short time the hotel has been open—since September 15, 2021—and it doesn’t appear to have any kinks to be ironed out. The Pendry Manhattan West presents a great reason to return soon as well. Eastern Mediterranean restaurant Zou Zou’s recently opened, featuring notable chefs Madeline Sperling and Juliana Latif. Additionally, the property is set to unveil the Rooftop whiskey bar on the 21st floor in spring 2022, which will undoubtedly reveal stellar views.
